The Olive Tree
Sactuary
We have a 10 donum site on the old Nicosia / Kyrenia
Road, near the village of Bogaz (Boghaz). Here we keep the olive trees
that were orphaned and had no where else to go at the time they were
threatened.
The mature olive trees, which have
settled there and are now all growing. Without the Sanctuary facility, these
trees would have been lost. This is the site where trees are
relocated as a last resort and taken care of by us at personal expense.
The last few giants, funded by the United Nations
Development Programme (ACT), arrived recently and are still settling into their
new home. One of these large tree, nearest to the road, we decided to name after our UNDP project
officer, Dr. Nicolas Jerraud.
A recent addition to our collection is Yusuf,
seen here on the right, named after the friend who helped us to move it.
We estimate him to be
around 800 years old; the tree that is!

This is old Yusuf on arrival at the Sanctuary, being
watered for the first time. About as old as the famous Bellapaix Abbey!
